Augsburg on Nov. 6
Pastor Victoria Cortez--founder of the Lutheran Church in Nicaragua-- will speak at several functions that are open to the public on Nov. 6 at Augsburg College.
Cortez's congregation in Managua, Nicaragua--Iglesia Luterana Fe y Esperanza (Faith and Hope Lutheran Church) ministers with youth and families in more than 20 communities.
Cortez, who has worked on domestic abuse legislation in Nicaragua, will give the homily at the 10:20 a.m. chapel service in Augsburg's Hoversten Chapel, and during a 12-1:30 p.m. lunch session in the East Commons of the Christensen Center she will discuss politics and the Oct. 20 Nicaraguan elections.
Joining in that discussion will be representatives from a group organized through Augsburg's Center for Global Education that went to Nicaragua in August as part of a study-travel seminar. A light lunch will be served for $3 at the door.
From 5:30-7 p.m., Cortez will speak on "Church and Social Change in Nicaragua" in the East Commons of the Christensen Center. She will describe the challenges of ministry with youth and families in Nicaragua, the work of her congregation and how individuals and congregations in the United States can support it.
